Supermarine Etching Primer
(SM-664D) is our best selling and most popular marine primer
because of its versatility, outstanding sandability and
protective qualities over a wide variety of substrates. It
creates a virtually unbreakable chemical bond to whatever it has
been applied to which allows it to be used almost anywhere and
most any application! Etching Primer should be the primer of
choice on wood, fiberglass and aluminum applications. Etching
Primer meets government specification number TT-P-664D so you
know you are getting the best.
A hi-performance Phenolic Modified Alkyd Etching Primer
specially formulated for use with hard to prime surfaces such as
aluminum and fiberglass. Also acceptable for use on metal or
iron surfaces. Etching Primer is a lacquer proof, fast drying,
high solid, low VOC marine primer coating that inhibits rust, is
resistant to salt spray and penetrates cracks around light rust
and mill scale. It protects corners and edges and resists
exposure to the damaging effects of weather. Acceptable for use
wood, fiberglass and aluminum boats, infrastructure and
equipment. A premium-grade, high solid marine coating that not
only acts as an effective rust preventative on steel and iron
substrates but should be viewed as an integral component of any
corrosion resistant coating system. Finish coats such as
nitrocellulose lacquers may be applied directly over it without
the worry of lifting or wrinkling. Available in quart, gallon or
five gallon cans. Color: White or Red Oxide. Finish is low
sheen.

Stats:
Dries to the touch in 30 minutes, tack free in 1 hour,
recoatable in 2 hours, dries hard in 4 hours. Apply by brush,
roller or spray. Coverage is approximately 250 square feet per
gallon, depending on the texture and porosity of the surface.
Dries to the touch in 30 minutes. Recoat in 8 hours. Apply by
brush, roller or spray.
Recommended preparation:
For best results remove old marine coating, loose scale, grease,
oil and contaminates. Sand, grind, bead blast or power-wash
prior to the application of any cleaner or primer. Where rust is
evident use
SM-5679 Phos-Pro
Rust Converting Cleane. All surfaces must be thoroughly clean
and dry before the application of any marine primer, boat paint
or antifouling bottom paint.
Application:
Recommend applying a minimum of 2 coats.
Etching Primer should be allowed to dry a minimum of two to
three hours before recoating with subsequent primers or marine
finish coatings. It should be applied to a dry film thickness
between 0.3-0.5 mil. For non-marine equipment or on iron or
steel surfaces it should be applied to 0.6-0.8 mil dry film.
NOTE: This marine primer is designed for application over
surface-treated metal or pretreatment coatings (See
SM-117 Pre-Treatment Wash Primer).
If used for dip or flow-coat application, the product
suitability should be determined by the user.
